Club night summary – 29th November

Our final PDI league competitions of the year, with ‘open’ and set subject ‘heat’ were held this week.

The competitions had another great response of entries with 111 Images initially put forward. In order to enable sufficient meaningful critique from our visiting Judge Steven Galvin, the numbers were reduced to 32 in the open and 29 in the set subject, a total of 61, giving each author their first choice in each competition.

The competitions provided some Interesting Images in particular the set subject with the various interpretations of ‘heat’.

It was great to see a number of our newer members scoring high in both competitions.

Studio Workshop Evening – BTS

This week Ant held the second of the beginners sessions on studio portraiture at West Herts College. Ant demonstrated using a “Beauty Dish” modifier to create evenly lit head and shoulder shots of our model for the evening Emily Miller

Gordon surprised as all by producing a violin at the end of the session to create some wonderfully creative images with Emily. Of course we could resist having a play on it and sadly I confirm there were no natural violinists amongst us!

A well attended and enjoyable evening and our thanks again to Ant for another superbly organised session.

In addition to a PDI screening of some of the entries into this years competitions we were given presentations by members Mike Brankin giving us an Interesting talk on his recent travels showing some great Images. Our youngest member Beth Christie displayed her successful panels for her GCSE’s and spoke of her journey using a film camera. Tom Chesterton also showed an entertaining ‘AV’ of Salcomb Estuary.

A nice social evening celebrating the diverse creative talented members we have.

Club night summary – 14th November

Our theme for our workshop evening this week was ‘experimental lighting’ presented by ‘Ant’. A really good Interactive evening including the use of powerful patterned backdrops with projected lights. This was made all the more effective by visiting model ‘Emily’ who was her normal professional self, enabling some great shots to be obtained by the members.
Another great evening in our diverse season programme of events.

Club night summary – 7th November

This week we had a great talk and enjoyable presentation from Chris Shepherd entitled ‘London Light, London Life’. Chris shared many excellent Images he had taken in London, a lot during his lunch breaks from his workplace in the City.
With good humour he explained the locations and occasions he had taken the shots.

He also shared his mantra and approach to photography, explaining that the more practice and use of his camera the more competent he became. He felt the reverse also applied, that by not taking pictures on a regular basis was detrimental to his creative craft, hence his almost daily lunchtime photography sessions.

An Inspiring enjoyable night. – Steve
